VISION PREM

Fostering Innovation and Inclusivity in Materials Science

Overview

VISION (Venture for Innovation in Self-assembly and Integration of Optoelectronic Nanostructures) PREM (Partnership for Research and Education in Materials) is a collaborative program between the University of California, Merced (UCM), and the NSF Science and Technology Center for Integration of Modern Optoelectronic Materials on Demand (IMOD). This program offers unique opportunities for students, educators, faculty, and partners at national labs and in industry to engage in cutting-edge research and educational initiatives in the field of materials science.

Welcome to the VISION-PREM!

The VISION-PREM just launched and this website is currently under construction. So please check back for updates. For now please find some key highlights of the VISION-PREM program below and enjoy listening to a DeepDive podcast conversation telling you about our program on the About Us page.

  • Focus on Diversity and Inclusion: VISION prioritizes broadening participation in STEM fields by focusing on underrepresented minority (URM) students, particularly those of Hispanic/Latinx descent. The program aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all participants, fostering a sense of belonging and promoting equity in STEM.
  • Cutting-Edge Research in Quantum Materials: The program focuses on scalable optoelectronics with integrated nanostructures, aiming for breakthroughs in quantum light generation and manipulation for various applications.
  • Hands-on Research Opportunities for Students: VISION provides undergraduate and graduate students with hands-on research experiences through summer programs, lab rotations, and research fellowships. Students benefit from access to state-of-the-art facilities and mentorship from expert faculty at both UCM and IMOD institutions across the nation.
  • Innovative Teacher Training Program: Recognizing the importance of early STEM education, VISION is developing a unique K-14 teacher training program. Graduate students work with K-14 educators to develop and co-teach engaging materials science curricula, inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
  • Comprehensive Professional Development: VISION offers a range of professional development opportunities, including mentorship training, workshops on scientific communication, and team science, preparing students for successful careers in academia and industry.
  • Strong Institutional Partnership: The UCM-IMOD partnership leverages the strengths of both institutions. UCM brings a diverse student body and a rapidly growing research program, while IMOD offers access to world-class facilities, expertise, and a nationwide network of researchers.

VISION invites you to explore the program further and discover how you can get involved as a student, teacher, faculty member, or partner from industry or national labs. The program website provides detailed information about research themes, educational initiatives, and partnership opportunities. Join us in shaping the future of materials science and fostering a more inclusive and diverse STEM community.
