RESEARCH AT AERIS
Simulation, discovery, and aerospace learning
We connect technical aerospace research with evidence-based education. Our initial focus is computational: building, testing, and using models to understand aerospace systems.
Research directions
Computational aerospace
Compressible and multiphase flows, shock–droplet interactions, numerical methods, and simulation of aerospace systems.
Rocket propulsion, combustion, and chemistry modeling
Computational modeling of rocket propulsion systems, combustion processes, and associated chemistry.
Aircraft dynamics and visualization
Models and interactive tools for exploring aircraft motion, stability, control response, and the assumptions behind a simulation.
Evidence-based aerospace education
Development and evaluation of tools that help students interpret aerospace concepts. Technical validation and evidence of student learning are distinct questions that guide our work.
Proposed initial projects
These directions are being developed. Specific research questions, scope, and student roles will be defined before a project begins.
01 · Interactive aircraft dynamics and stability
Develop and validate an interactive simulation, then investigate a focused question about model assumptions, numerical behavior, or control response. A complementary education study could examine how visual representations affect students’ interpretation of aircraft axes, stability, or dynamic modes.
02 · Compressible-flow and propulsion visualization
Reproduce a benchmark and investigate a defined modeling, sensitivity, or validation question. Educational visualizations could help students explore pressure, velocity, Mach number, choking, and shock behavior, with their learning value evaluated through an appropriate study design.
Contribute to a project
Potential contributions include Python or MATLAB programming, verification and validation, data analysis, visualization, literature review, and technical writing. Students may focus on technical research, education research, or a project connecting both.
