PhD Graduate 2011
Dr. Seyoum Gebremariam has a B.S. Physics from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia and a M.S. degree in Environmental Science from the University of Idaho. He also earned a M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering under Dr. Beutel at Washington State University. He has also studied meteorology in Hamburg, Germany and Pune, India. During his graduate work in the US he researched a wide range of topics including biological phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment, nutrient removal in treatment wetlands, fate of pesticides in treatment wetlands, and sorption of pesticides to aquatic sediments. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Ohio State University where he studied how climate change affects hydrology, eutrophication and harmful algal blooms in the Lake Erie. He has published a wide range of peer reviewed papers on these topics including highly cited review articles on biological phosphorus removal and fate and transport of pesticides in the environment. Dr. Gebremariam, now an expert in remote sensing of water quality and harmful algal blooms in reservoirs, is a senior water quality manager with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California which serves water to over 13 million residents.
