June 2023: Electronic structure workshop. The Nowadnick group attends the 35th Workshop on Recent Developments in Electronic Structure Methods, which was held on the UC Merced campus! An article about the workshop is here. Brad, Kamal, Kishwar, and Nabin presented posters at the workshop. Kishwar won the People's Choice Poster Prize for her poster on "Competing structural phases and piezoelectricity in Ruddlesden-Popper Li2SrNb2O7 from first principles." Congratulations!

May 2023: ALS science highlight. Our work on hexagonal LuFeO3 in collaboration with Jan Musfeldt's group is featured as an Advanced Light Source science highlight! Read the article here.

April 2023: MRS meeting. Nowadnick group members attend the spring MRS meeting in San Francisco. Beth, Kamal, and Nabin give talks and Kishwar presents a poster.

March 2023: NSF grant and news article on our research. Our research on electric field control of magnetic dopants in ferroelectric oxides, and a NSF grant that we received to support this work, is highlighted in a UC Merced news article, which can be found here.

March 2023: APS. The Nowadnick group attends the APS March Meeting in Las Vegas, NV. Beth, Brad, Kamal, Kishwar, Kuntal, and Nabin give talks on their research.

February 2023: New publication. Nabin's paper on ferroelectric switching pathways in Aurivillius-phase oxides is published as an Editor's Suggestion in PRB!

February 2023: Welcome Brad! Brad Barker starts as a postdoc in the Nowadnick group (co-advised with Dr. Sinéad Griffin at LBNL).

February 2023: New publication. Sriram's work on connecting lattice dynamics calculations to real space infrared spectroscopy on hexagonal oxides, in collaboration with Prof. Jan Musfeldt's group at University of Tennessee, is published in ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces!

January 2023: MRPI award. Beth receives a Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives grant from the University of California Office of the President to work on Ferroelectric oxide membranes for low-energy next-generation electronics. A news article can be found here. We are excited to start this project!

January 2023: Welcome Haseeb! Haseeb Ahmad starts as a first-year physics rotation student in the Nowadnick group.

November 2022: Welcome Kuntal! Kuntal Talit starts as a postdoc in the Nowadnick group.

September 2022: Kamal passes his qualifying exam. Congratulations!

August 2022: New publication. Kishwar's paper on polar nanoregions and competing polar/non-polar phases in n=2 Ruddlesden-Popper Ca3Mn2O7, in collaboration with the Alem (PSU) and Cheong (Rutgers) groups, is published in Nature Communications!

June-August 2022: LLNL internship. Nabin is a Computational Chemistry and Materials Science intern at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, where he worked on understanding noise sources and information loss in superconducting qubits.

June 2022: Summer school.  Kishwar attends the School on Electron-Phonon Physics from First Principles, held at University of Texas, Austin.

May 2022: Kishwar passes her qualifying exam. Congratulations!

March 2022: APS March meeting. Nabin, Kishwar, and Kamal present talks on their research in Chicago!

February 2022: New publication. Nabin's paper in collaboration with Sinead Griffin's group LBNL is published in PRB! In this paper we investigated ferroelectric switching mechanisms in the Aurivillius oxide Bi2WO6 and explored electric field control of single Fe spins doped into the ferroelectric oxide host.

February 8, 2022: Ferro2022 Workshop. Beth presents an invited talk at the Fundamental Physics of Ferroelectrics and Related Materials Workshop on "Charge order textures induced by non-linear lattice couplings in a half-doped manganite"

December 2021: XSEDE allocation. We renew our XSEDE allocation on the Expanse cluster.

November 2021: Nabin passes his qualifying exam. Congratulations!

October 2021: Seminar. Beth presents a theory seminar at the Molecular Foundry at LBNL.

October 2021: Three new PRB's. We have three new papers published in PRB, all focusing on high pressure behavior of layered oxides. Two of the papers are theory-experiment collaborations with Jan Musfeldt's group at University of Tennessee.

September 2021: ONR grant. We receive a grant from the Office of Naval Research to support research on piezoelectricity in layered perovskite oxides. Thank you for the support!

June 2021: New publication. Our paper with Lena Kourkoutis' group on exotic charge ordering that breaks inversion symmetry in Nd1/2Sr1/2MnO3 appears in Nature Communications!

March 2021: APS March Meeting. Nabin presents a talk on his work on "Ferroelectric switching in the Aurivillius phase oxide SrBi2Ta2O9 from first principles."

January 2021: Ferro2021 Workshop. Beth serves as a co-organizer of the Fundamental Physics of Ferroelectrics and Related Materials Workshop, held virtually this year.

January 2021: Farewell Sriram. Sriram starts a new position at Micron Technology. Good luck in your new job and we will miss you!

December 2020: Farewell Zachary. Zachary graduates from UC Merced with a degree in MSE. Congratulations!

December 2020: XSEDE allocation. The Nowadnick group is awarded a research allocation of 476,153 service units on the San Diego Supercomputer Center's Expanse Cluster.

Aug. 19, 2020: New publication. Our paper with Sang-Wook Cheong's group on hybrid improper ferroelectric Sr3Sn2O7 appears in Advanced Functional Materials!

June 2020: Welcome Zachary. UC Merced undergraduate student Zachary Clemens joins the group for the summer as a part of the UROC SOAR program.

January 26-29: Ferro2020 Workshop.  Beth and Sriram attend the Fundamental Physics of Ferroelectrics and Related Materials Workshop held in Silver Spring, MD. Beth presented a talk and Sriram presented a poster. Sriram won a best poster award at the workshop, congratulations!

January 2020: Welcome Kishwar and Kamal. MBSE PhD student Kishwar Hasin and Physics PhD student Kamal Hossain join the Nowadnick group.

Nov. 19, 2010: New publication. Our paper with Jan Musfeldt's group at the University of Tennessee on ferroelastic domain walls in Ca3Ti2O7 is published in Nature Communications!

Nov. 18, 2019: New publication. Our paper on polar A-site ordered SmBaMn2O6 appears as an Editor's Suggestion in PRB!

Sept. 1, 2019: Welcome Nabaraj. Physics PhD student Nabaraj Pokhrel has joined the group!

Aug. 15, 2019: Nowadnick Group moves to UC Merced.  Beth has started as an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Merced.
