About The Project

The study we are doing is called the Everyday Activities and Cardiovascular Health (EACH) project. With the EACH project, we want to figure out what risk factors contribute to unhealthy hearts and how leisure activities can play a role in preventing heart disease. What are risk factors? Risk factors are the things we do daily that build up to make our bodies and minds sick. We shouldn’t ignore these important things because they become worse over time! Our hearts can become unwell when we sleep poorly, feel sad for long periods (depression), or are stressed and not physically active. Doing your favorite activities might stop these risk factors from happening. As a research team, we are interested to know how, what, and when people engage in their leisure activities and how these activities can be good for us!

What Does The Project Involve?

The project will have two parts of data collection: an online survey and a set of questions you complete each day as you go about your life while wearing a device called a Fitbit for two weeks. We will explain the steps and phases below so there is no confusion!

The first step is after you sign up, you will be asked to complete a few surveys about yourself. These surveys are online, and you can do them at home or where you feel comfortable.

The second step is you will be asked to come into the Stress and Health lab to get ready for part two. When you come to the lab, we will ask you to install an app on your smartphone. For two weeks, this app will occasionally send your phone push notifications – just a few times each day – to answer some questions in the app. These questions are how we collect the information we need about your leisure activities and physical health! Don’t worry! The questions only take a couple of minutes to complete. We also ask that you wear your Fitbit for two weeks.

Finally, we will ask you to drop off the Fitbit when you complete the project. We will tell you how to do this when you come into our lab.

Participant Compensation:

The good news is as a thank you from us, we will pay you for all your hard-earned work!

For the first part of the project – the online surveys – you can earn $15.

For the second part of the project – the app and the Fitbit part – we will pay you $30 per week for each of the two weeks. Plus, if you complete most of the app prompts and keep your Fitbit fully charged (we will explain how to do this all!), you can earn a $10 bonus.

Finally, we will pay you $15 to drop off the Fitbit and answer a few questions about your experience completing the project.
