Professor Van Dyke’s research focuses on social movements, hate crime, and sexuality, with an emphasis on how characteristics of the social environment influence levels of collective action. Recent projects include studies of how personal stories and statements regarding sexual assault change public opinion, protest tactics used by racial justice student protesters, and the academic experiences of LGBTQ+ college students.
