Index Introduction

School College Readiness Opportunity and Equity Index

Where do California students have access to meaningful college and career preparation opportunities, and who participates in them?
The School College Readiness Opportunity and Equity Index examines how college-readiness resources are distributed across California schools and student populations. The Index brings together measures of:
  • Dual enrollment
  • Advanced Placement courses
  • Advanced core academic courses
  • Participation and representation across student groups
By combining these measures, the Index provides a broader picture of the opportunities available to students than any single indicator can provide.

Why the Index Is Needed
Research has documented substantial differences in access to college-readiness opportunities based on race and ethnicity, gender, English learner status, and disability status. However, existing landscape studies often examine only one program or measure at a time.
The Index was developed to:
  • Map the distribution of college-readiness opportunities across schools and communities
  • Examine whether different student groups are equitably represented
  • Compare patterns across counties, districts, schools, and academic years
  • Monitor how opportunity and equity change over time
  • Recognize that students may benefit from several different pathways to college and career preparation
Data Sources

The Index draws from:
  • The Civil Rights Data Collection, or CRDC
  • California Department of Education school enrollment and demographic data
