Evaluation of Storage Technologies

Complementing the work on modeling of capacity expansion and dispatch, we are studying the storage technologies that may play roles in helping a zero-carbon grid function reliably at low cost.

  • How efficient are different storage technologies (for every MWh you put in, how much can you get back out)?
  • Can they easily be scaled up to large dedicated facilities, or down to be attached to a commercial or residential building?
  • Are there geographic restrictions on where they can be built?
  • What is the current cost, both in $/kWh and $/kW for systems of a specific size and how is it likely to change in the future?
  • Are there any companies actually working with this technology right now or with a working prototype, or is it only confined to academic papers and theoretical simulations?

The better we can answer these questions, the better we can understand the modeling results, and the better we can chart a course for reaching decarbonization goals.

If you are developing a storage technology, we hope that you will contact us.
