Dr. Rosemarie Aurora Bongers

(she/her or they/them)

I am a mathematician, educator, and transgender woman. I am currently an assistant teaching professor in applied mathematics at the University of California, Merced and the chair of the Data Science and Computing program. Please feel free to contact me via email; my office is ACS 352.

My mathematical research focuses on the intersections between harmonic analysis, geometric measure theory, complex and quasiconformal maps, and fractals. My educational research focuses on the effectiveness and impact of inclusive pedagogical practices and alternative assessment styles, with a special focus on minoritized and neurodiverse students. More information about my ongoing projects is in my research statement or on my research page. Many computational resources are available through my GitHub profile.

In Fall 2024 I am teaching Math 032 (Probability and Statistics) and Data 8 (Introduction to Data Science). For more information, please see my teaching page or the course Canvas page.

We all have a responsibility to create a mathematical community which is kind, caring, and inclusive of all of our stories and identities. Too many people have been kept out of mathematics by its existing power structures; I support Federico Ardila's axioms. As a queer, neurodiverse, trans woman I work for this along multiple axes and believe that the fight for liberation must be intersectional.

I completed my PhD at Michigan State University in 2018 before becoming a postdoctoral lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis. Subsequently I was a preceptor at Harvard University before joining UC Merced in 2023. More information is in my CV.
