This class introduces student to the basic objectives, approaches, and applications of epidemiology and to selected specific areas of interest of this population-based, numeric science. The class concentrates on concepts of disease surveillance and measurement, risk factor evaluation and statistical analysis of epidemiologic data. Topics illustrate key epidemiologic concepts using historic studies and current public health and emerging disease issues. The class follows a lecture format with assigned readings from the textbook, exercises, and readings from recent epidemiologic literature.
