I frequently get questions from undergraduate students wondering what kinds of careers in public health might be available to them. Below, I maintain a list of websites, news articles, and other resources that may be helpful in answering those questions.
General public health career resources:
Association of Schools and Programs in Public Health. The national accreditor of schools and programs in public health. Contains a wealth of information, including a “Find an Academic Program” selection tool.
Public Health Online: Careers. A useful overview of possible PH careers, education pathways, and more.
U.C. Berkeley School of Public Health Career Resources. Lots here!
UCLA School of Public Health Career Resources. The “Professional Development Tools and Templates” section has some good links.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Fellowship Opportunities. Opportunities available at the undergrad level and beyond.
“That’s a Public Health Job?” (Columbia University SPH website, but still useful)
Discover Healthcare Admin. Information about degree and career options in healthcare administration.
Public Health Careers: The World Needs You - YouTube video presented by Karen Elliott, senior instructor and public health undergraduate internship coordinator in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She presents many career paths available to those who have a background rooted in public health or are interested in embarking on the path to a medical degree. Recommended by a student of mine!
Epidemiology-focused:
Public Health Online: Epidemiology. Some helpful listings and descriptions of potential careers in epidemiology.
“StudentDoctor.Net” forum on careers in epidemiology. An informative discussion thread.
Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists. CSTE has lots of useful information, including a fellowship program and a careers page.
Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment information about epidemiologists.
Regular/semi-regular internship opportunities:
Stanford Population Health Summer Research Program. Paid research & internship opportunity for undergraduate students from underrepresented and historically excluded groups. No recommendation letters or transcripts necessary to apply!
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) internship program. Paid summer, fall, or spring internships in Rockville, MD, with the federal SAMHSA agency. Interns gain practical experience through projects, special assignments, or research that supports federal, state, and community-based programs, policies, and best practices in the prevention and treatment of substance abuse and mental illness. Prioritizes applicants from underrepresented backgrounds.
CDC Internship opportunities. Links to opportunities at the undergrad, master's, and PhD level.
California Department of Health Care Services internship opportunities. The DHCS Student Internship Program is an unpaid, volunteer opportunity for undergraduate and graduate level students who are able to make a semester, quarter or summer commitment. DHCS internships provide opportunities to work in public service and focus on issues of significance to Medi-Cal beneficiaries, providers, health plans, and state government.
