Black Soldier Flies can save the world!!*
*pardon the hyperbole, but these insects can help solve major challenges, including:
-
Greenhouse gas emissions from rotting organic waste (food waste, agriculture byproducts)
-
Non-sustainable livestock husbandry (e.g. harvesting wild fish to feed farm-raised fish)
The solution? Black Soldier Fly larvae consume nearly any organic material and efficiently convert waste mass into larval mass. This bioconversion significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions (compared to letting the organic waste rot). The larvae are nutrient-rich and can be used as livestock feed.
Our primary goal is to discover genetic and microbial factors that optimize the waste bioconversion abilities of Black Soldier Fly larvae.
