Jackie Shay

Associate Director, Center for Engaged Teaching & Learning

Jackie is an ecologist and pedagogical consultant. She earned her degrees in biology (B.S.), Mycology (M.Sc.), and Quantitative and Systems Biology (Ph.D.) all while exploring inclusive teaching practices as a graduate student instructor. Jackie has been teaching since 2006 and has served as the Associate Director for UC Merced's Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning since 2020. Jackie cares about STEM education research and is interested in studying how experiential learning and field-based learning increase a student's sense of belonging and self-efficacy in STEM disciplines. Jackie spends her time developing graduate student and postdocs teachers and employs myriad strategies rooted in equity-minded teaching.
